The timing of your cruise

By BVI BareBoat Charters

Prices, sailing conditions, and weather vary depending on the time you visit the British Virgin Islands. Winter (December – March) is the high season when Americans and Europeans come to escape their cold weather. Summer and fall are times you can find bargains.

During that high season, accommodations and charter boats command the highest rates. Also, some of the best sailing weather in the BVI occurs during this season. Temperatures are warm but moderate, winds are present and predictable, and all shore services, such as dining, are fully available.

Conversely, some of the best prices are available for accommodations and charters during the Summer and Fall (or the spring shoulder season). Normal rates during this off-season are 15 to 30% less than those in high season, and even bigger discounts can be had. Many of the charter companies run specials during this period that offer discounted rates, free days, or even free weeks of charter time. This low season can offer warmer temperatures (both water and air), easier access to moorings, and more availability of charter boats for cruising. The thing to beware of, of course, is that hurricane season falls squarely into this window. Hurricanes are most likely from the end of August through early November. Hurricanes are rare enough that you may conclude this is a reasonable risk to take that your trip may be disrupted; we have chartered several times during the beginning or end of hurricane season without any disruption.
